A Meal Fit For a King…and a President, a First Lady, and myself!

December 18, 2012

This week I had the unique privilege of attending a holiday party at the most incredible home of all – The White House.

I won’t go on and on about how incredible it was to meet the regal couple and shake hands with the woman whose biceps inspire my daily training sessions, but I will go on and on about the sublime spread of sweets at this special soirée.  But before I dive into the desserts (which is exactly what I did at the White House – not so regal), I must reflect on the radiant raw bar, which as many of you know by now, is my top notch nosh. Lured by oysters, shrimp, and crab claws, I was hooked.

Moving on from crustaceans to cakes, it is ALL about the King of confection, Executive Chef Bill Yosses, nicknamed “The Crust Master” by the President.  Although the assortment of sweets included treats such as apple pie, gingerbread cookies, sticky toffee pudding, and coconut cake, my hands down (or face first in my case) favorite  was his famous huckleberry pie which is always present at the White House Thanksgiving dinners.  I am telling you – this pie is ambrosia. Between the huckleberries, blueberries, the local artisanal honey, and the hint of cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon, THIS is the pinnacle of pies; the pie in the sky if you will.

That being said, the coconut cream cake and the strawberry shortcake smothered with whipped cream and fresh strawberries were my sweet sloppy seconds tied with Yosses’ tantalizing toffee pudding.  The “pudding” is really more of a rich cake made magical with Medjool dates, oh and the brown sugar, butter, and cream probably help as well. It was a cornucopia of confection and my affection for the Obamas was sweetened that much more. Although these saintly sweets were just what you’d expect from the most famous house in the world, they’d probably play a more devilish role in Michelle Obama’s “My Plate” method. That’s what #WomanVersusFood is ALL about. Eat hard. Work-out hard. You better believe I was back in the gym the next day. Did I mention Michelle’s biceps? Ofcourse I am inspired by her athletic physique, but how else do you think I was able to out-elbow everyone for the pie. Fit femmes win every time.
