    My carnivorous curriculum reached new levels of study this week in Austin, TX as I covered my 10th consecutive SXSW Music Festival. In between interviewing bands and rappers, I’d pick up a rack of ribs from Salt Lick BBQ, chicken from Stubbs, brisket from Ruby’s, or a basket of Kimchi fries from Chi’Lantro, the Korean/Mexican food truck. I’ll compile a list of my Texas tips, but in the meantime here’s a pic of me proudly presenting my most precious pick.  #BeefRibsOrBust

    One hundred years ago today, Girl Scouts of the USA was founded by Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low of Savannah, Ga. When Low created the Girl Scouts organization in 1912, her purpose was ”to train girls to take their rightful places in life.”

    My rightful place in life at this moment is to patronize the Dreyer’s/Edy’s Limited Edition Girl Scout Cookie Ice Cream Flavors. I hope Daisy would be proud. I’m proud that I actually tracked this down in Manhattan. It was not easy. When there’s a will…

  • South Beach Wine & Food Festival: I came, I ate…I ate…I ate…and now I need to be rolled back to the Big Apple so I can eat that too

    I learned this week that Miami IS my vice.  Forget about the Miami heat - I was all about the Miami MEAT! In the past 5 days I achieved the following 5 eat feats:

    1. I manned an MVP eater title downing 17 burgers at the #BurgerBash.

    At the 6th Annual Burger Bash eating Burger #17. Of the 17 I ate, my “Most Innovative” award goes to Florida’s own Ortanique Restaurant for their “50/50 Burger” (Indian spiced half ground beef, half ground lamb with Parrano cheese, topped with mango cherry chili chutney served with crispy goat cheese tator tots) Heaven. 

     2. I dined at Miami musts @Hakkasan @Fontainebleau, La Cote @Fontainebleau, Zuma, @SugarcaneRawBar, Big Pink, and Joe’s Stone Crab.

    3. I hung with Chefs and wowed them (read: scared them) with my ability to out-eat large men.

    With Chef Dan Kluger of ABC Kitchen, who started to inch away as I incessantly showed him countless photos of his dishes that I had saved on my iPhone. 

    4. I savored beef ribs prepared 3 different ways for 3 consecutive nights (Warning: The following photos may be offensive to Vegans and Vegetarians).

    5. I went food shopping at Publix…Ok so only I find this to be an exciting feat. (No photo was available for this entry)

    Clearly, I took full advantage of all the weekend-turned-week had to offer and I am finally full. As I head back home to New York, I will attempt to forgo my nightly ribs habit…until I leave for Austin, Texas, in exactly 2 weeks to cover SXSW Music Festival. That’s when I really go big. Everything IS bigger in Texas, including my mania for meat.

    I’m suddenly craving a head of lettuce. 


  • Burger Bash on the Beach

    Bienvenido a Miami is right! It is time for the 6th Annual Burger Bash at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival hosted by Rachel Ray. In less than 3 hours my carnivorous cravings will be met by the most mesmerizing menu of nearly 35 beautiful burgers.  Just some of the listings: 

    Bash Burger - Caramelized onion and bacon jam, shaved pickles and secret sauce served w/ Homemade Salt and Vinegar Chips

    Ah mi dios.

    The Wellington - Burger topped with foie gras, wild mushrooms, caramelized onions and fresh herbs served w/ sweet Potato Tots

    Increíble.

    50/50 Bombay Burger - Toasted Indian spiced half ground beef, half ground lamb with Parrano cheese, topped with mango cherry chili chutney served w/ Crispy Goat Cheese Tator Tots.

    Delicioso.

    Awards will be given out for categories such as people’s choice, best-dressed burger, best side dish, and judges’ favorite. The overall Burger Bash title is still up for the taking, but we DO know who is up for the eating. I’m going to win the meat maven MVP title by a land-“slider”…no bun intended…I’m on a roll. Ok I’ll stop now.

    2. A restaurant in Beverly Hills part of the An-Restaurant family known for their secret kitchen dishes

    3. My lunch from yesterday at Crustacean: Cracked Whole Roasted Dungeness Crab, AN’s garlic sauce and secret spices    

    You know it’s a sign that you are perhaps enjoying your crab just a tad too much, when a server from another area comes over and not only suggests you wear a bib but actually takes the initiative to put it on you. Yep. I take consuming my crustaceans seriously. 

    Busted.

    This pizza from @Certe is topped with turkey meatballs, mashed potatoes & giblet gravy, butternut squash, cranberries and fresh Mozzarella.

    Granted I am not eating this at the moment because I am at the Hagendorf household where my mother has been cooking since Labor Day. However, this is a delicious way to utilize leftovers - leftovers: a foreign concept in the Hagendorf home.
