NEWSDAY: Adding “Confetti Engineer” To My Resume

December 28, 2012

By being given the honor to serve as Official Host of Times Square New Year’s Eve I was also made privy to all the wonderful Times Square Traditions that take place leading up to midnight on 12/31. One of those traditions is the annual “Confetti Test”. Yes. Test. Each year people from all over the world come to the Times Square Visitor Center to write their wish for the new year on a piece of confetti. An actual TON of this confession confetti is then hand tossed on 12/31 as the ball drops, where “Confetti Engineers” literally float wishes by hand onto the 1 million revelers below braving the Square.

Prior to the big night, the “airworthiness” of the confetti is tested to make sure it will fall as planned, and THIS  is where I got to prove my prowess.  I learned quickly that you have to “fluff and float” the confetti to maximize buoyancy. I also learned that if you coin phrases like “fluff and float” then people will think you are strategizing and are actually doing something tactical.

It was an absolute blast and I can assure you, with confidence,  the confetti is ready. “Confetti Engineer”-approved.
